New York architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro has released its preliminary design concept for the U.S. Olympic Museum, a new cultural institution planned for Colorado Springs. The 60,000-square-foot facility will celebrate Team USA’s achievements at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with a range of interactive exhibitions highlighting athlete training regimens, record-breaking performances, and related science and technology. It will also include a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, theater, gift shop, café, and broadcast studio.

The design features two twisting, connected volumes that peel up from the ground to frame a new public plaza, as “two parts of one body in counterpoise,” said partner Elizabeth Diller in a statement. “Inspired by the movement of athletes, the United States Olympic Museum spirals up and outwards from a central atrium, drawing the public in at its base and propelling them up through the galleries.”

The project is scheduled to break ground next spring, with completion expected before the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February 2018. An $80 million fundraising campaign is ongoing, with $42 million raised to date.
