In a leap forward for zero-emissions transportation, a team of French scientists, engineers, and designers are celebrating the successful launch of Energy Observer, whose only fuel is derived from solar panels, wind turbines, and an advanced hydrogen fuel-cell system.
The mayor of Paris , Anne Hidalgo, was on board for the historic event on Saturday. From the French capital, the 100-foot-long boat will spend the next six years visiting 50 countries and some 101 ports of call, where the crew hopes to meet other ecologically minded innovators. The predetermined destinations will comprise major cities that are already engaged in energy transition, islands that are energetically self-sufficient, threatened ecosystems, and various UNESCO World Heritage sites.
“In the past, man explored to conquer territories and amass wealth,” said expedition leader Jérôme Delafosse in a statement. “With Energy Observer, we wish to explore differently. That’s why our expedition will focus on discovering and sharing solutions for a cleaner future."
