The World Trade Center Complex Welcomes an Elevated Memorial Park

Sharing is caring!

Though New York City houses more than 1,700 parks and playgrounds, there is always room for one more. One of the city’s most bustling neighborhoods, the Financial District, is expected to open a new elevated park this summer at the World Trade Center complex , thanks to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Liberty Park will offer an acre of foliage, walkways, and seating, all elevated 25 feet above the street level, with a view overlooking the National September 11 Memorial Plaza. It is expected to create an atmosphere similar to that of the High Line, a 1.45-mile elevated park that was once an unused railroad track, buzzing with vibrant city energy and a dose of much-needed green—all while paying tribute to the tragic losses of 9/11.

Several commemorative structures will be featured, acting as an extension of the memorial. Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava designed the St. Nicholas National Shrine, which is on the park grounds and still under construction.

The church is a revival of the Greek Orthodox church that previously occupied the site before it was destroyed on 9/11. The St. Nicholas National Shrine is expected to be finished in the Fall of 2017.

As part of the park’s opening this summer, there will also be a 35-foot-high and 300-foot-long wall covered completely in plant life, called the Living Wall. It will run along the base of the park, allowing access via a staircase.

Although the Port Authority has not provided an exact opening date, it has taken to the official World Trade Center Twitter account to share photos of Liberty Park’s near-completion.
