Last week, renderings for the new €650 million ($733 million) children’s hospital in Dublin were released. The plan, which is the largest health infrastructure project in Ireland’s history, will unite three existing children’s hospitals: The main center will be located in Dublin on the campus of St. James’s Hospital, with suburbs in the cities of Tallaght and Blanchardstown.
The St. James’s campus hospital, designed by a team headed by Benedict Zucchi of international firm BDP, features an oval-shaped main building with a therapeutic rooftop garden, courtyard gardens, and sports facilities in addition to cutting-edge medical wards. Simplicity and nature were key—the team wanted to create a space where children would feel comfortable and be able to interact with the outdoors. The main hospital is scheduled to open in 2019 and the satellites in mid-2017.
