Earlier this month, architecture graduate students from the New School’s Parsons School of Design teamed up with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to create new locker room pavilions at the Sunset Park Recreation Center and Pool in Brooklyn. The students are part of Design Workshop, a Parson’s initiative that provides pro bono design and construction work for nonprofit organizations. Through a five-year partnership with the city’s parks department, Design Workshop will improve public spaces throughout New York.
The Sunset Park pool was one of the first four public pools built in Brooklyn. In years past, rooms inside the recreation center were used as changing facilities, shutting down programs in the gym and the computer lab during the summer. With the new locker rooms, however, these programs will be able to run year-round.
“Through our work with NYC Parks and Recreation, Parsons continues to build upon its commitment to design-led civic engagement—in this case, by improving some of our city’s most important public spaces,” Joel Towers, executive dean of Parsons, said in a statement. “The project at the Sunset Park Recreation Center and Pool demonstrates the innovation and expertise of our students.”
