Samsung announced today that as of next month, many of its older smart TVs will lose support for Netflix. So far, we’re not sure which TV sets this applies to, although Netflix itself has reportedly begun contacting affected customers to explain their options.
In a statement made to CNET , a Netflix representative explained that ‘‘on December 2, Netflix will no longer be supported on a small number of devices due to technical limitations’’.
Samsung has updated information on its customer support page to notify customers of the coming loss of support. In addition, Netflix has sent emails to affected individuals “with more information about alternative devices we support, so they can keep enjoying Netflix, uninterrupted.”
This news comes after streaming device manufacturer Roku released a statement last month with a similar message. After 1 December 2020, many old Roku streaming devices are also due to lose Netflix support, for the exact same reasons.
Owners of the affected Samsung smart TVs or Roku streaming devices are obliged to either buy a new television/streaming stick, make use of peripheral devices that still support Netflix or, in extreme cases, cancel their subscription altogether.
To confuse things further, it’s not completely clear which of the old Samsung smart TV models will no longer be compatible with Netflix. Frustratingly, the Netflix compatibility checker is too vague to be of any help; we’re hoping the streaming company releases a more detailed list of affected devices in the coming days. At the very least, you can assume that if you don’t have an email from Netflix, you’re safe.
Samsung advises that “in the future, Netflix can be viewed from many other devices capable of connecting to your TV.” In short, this means that once 2 December rolls around, you’ll need to make use of other compatible streaming devices connected to your TV in order to watch Netflix.
You might want to consider purchasing a streaming stick like the Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku Premiere , or even a high-end freeview box , if that’s your cup of tea. Also bear in mind that you can use a PS4 or Xbox One console. If you’d rather just bite the bullet and replace your old TV, however, why not have a browse of our favourite modern sets ?
