If you’ve got an extra $2,200 to spend on your kid (or $650 for your furry kid), Modern Cabana offers mini-sized — but equally sustainable — versions of their prefab backyard “cabanas” so your little ones can be just like Mom and Dad.
Modern Cabana’s scaled-down lineup includes the Kiddo , a children’s playhouse fully stocked with chalk paint interior walls, a paper roll art station and fold-down table. Sustainably speaking, the Kiddo is fully built with FSC-certified lumber construction, non-toxic paints and eco-friendly finishes. It retails for $2,200 and ships for free nationwide as a DIY kit of prefabbed, easy-to-assemble parts. If you happen to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, it comes with free assembly if you choose to pick up from Modern Cabana’s local warehouse.
The company also offers an even tinier structure, aptly named the Dog , for your four-legged friend. This weatherproof doghouse is built using the same sustainable lumber and paints as the Kiddo, plus a ready-to-plant “living roof” (who knows, your furry companion may even have a green paw). The Dog ships for $650 and comes ready to assemble as a DIY kit, or fully assembled for pickup within San Francisco.
Besides the mini offerings, Modern Cabana prefabricates a full line of “grown up” cabanas and studios. (They’re the same people behind Sunset magazine’s Idea House concept, the Modern Cottage .)
The fully finished units start at $11,500 and come with a range of green options, such as FSC-certified framing, lumber and siding; recycled denim insulation; bamboo flooring; and dual-pane low-E windows. You can even customize your cabana with green roofs and composting toilets, among many other features. Every structure is built by local carpenters in the company’s San Francisco-based shop.
