When shopping for home decor , it can be a bit tempting to go wild and snag one of everything—that gorgeous storage basket , a delicious smelling candle , and maybe several stylish coffee table books to round out your living room . But there are actually a few home decor items that may be costing you more than they should.
Don’t get us wrong, we firmly believe in buying products that you love—and we’re also not the budget police. However, if you want to save some coin, we’re sharing four smart ways to save on your home decor. Have some more cash to spend? We’re also sharing the one item we think is well worth the splurge.
Mirrors
Mirror, mirror on the wall, a great deal is the fairest of them all.
Mirrors can range from less than $20 to well into the hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars, depending on where you shop. However, we’ve found that budget-friendly options can still make a major impact in a space. And let’s be honest: Nobody will be able to tell the difference between a $30 mirror and a $300 style.
Since mirrors can be a great way to experiment with different trends, it may make the most sense to go with a lower end piece should you wish to change things up in a few months. Plus, you’ve truly hit the jackpot if you can find an affordable mirror that can work for more than one room in your home.
Lamps
We’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: You can find amazing lamps while thrift shopping. So why pay retail price?
You’d be surprised at how many affordable lamps we were able to find at my local thrift shops and second-hand stores—and we encourage you to do the same. Not only will you be pleasantly surprised, but you’ll save a couple hundred dollars (and a headache!) should your lamp accidentally get knocked off your side table.
Trays
Who doesn’t love decorating their coffee table with a gorgeous tray? The good news is there are plenty of affordable options to choose from. This burlwood tray , while still being on the higher end of budget-friendly, is a stunning piece that works wonderfully as a bar tray, coffee table piece, and much, much more. You can also find some gorgeous trays at antique stores and flea markets.
Pillow Covers
We’ll let you in on a little secret: stores like Amazon , H&M Home , and Etsy are chock-full of gorgeous pillow covers at excellent prices. If you love to experiment with new trends, look at these sites first before spending a more substantial amount on a pattern that may or may not bring you the same amount of joy a year from now. These stores are also great for picking up seasonal pillow covers to jazz up your home for the holidays. For example, how fun is this cozy-looking velvet cover ?
An Item That’s Worth the Splurge…
If you can swing it, a good picture frame is worth the splurge.
Whether you’re framing smaller photographs or a special piece of art, shop around and invest in a quality piece. Professional framing services are known for being pricey, but here’s our go-to trick: Coupon sites often offer amazing promos for local shops and can help you save big. Just be prepared to wait two to three weeks to receive your final product. Your artwork will retain more value over time if you place it in a nice frame, and even the most inexpensive art piece will look more luxe when housed properly.
