2015 Serpentine Pavilion Architects Announced

This week London’s Serpentine Galleries announced that Spanish firm SelgasCano—founded by José Selgas and Lucía Cano—will create the 15th design for the cultural institution’s annual summer celebration of architecture.

The Madrid-based studio follows in a long and prestigious line of Serpentine Pavilion designers, many of whom have clinched architecture’s highest award, the Pritzker Prize. Rem Koolhaas (who teamed with Sri Lankan–British artist Cecil Balmond for his 2006 effort), Frank Gehry (2008), Jean Nouvel (2010), Herzog & de Meuron (with Ai Weiwei in 2012), and 2013 AD Innovator Sou Fujimoto are among the past pavilion masterminds. SelgasCano, known for avant-garde work that employs unusual materials, such as plastic, to daring effect, promises a pavilion that embraces both its Kensington Gardens setting and the broader urban fabric of London.

The pavilion (a scheme for which will be unveiled in February) is slated to open in June and remain until October.
