There is always a sense of order in our work,” says Hawaii-based architect Mark de Reus. Founded in 2002, his 14-person firm specializes in working with clients who are committed to architecture that harmonizes with the Hawaiian landscape and cultural traditions. “For us, it is about working with clients who appreciate the contribution that original design can make in their lives,” he says.
“We embrace both past traditions and contemporary sensibilities in our work.” Inspired as much by Kyoto’s ancient temples as he is by Modernism—he admires what he calls the “distilled formal purity and structure” of Le Corbusier—he demonstrates this diversity in his work. Upcoming projects include resort residences as well as a new restaurant on the Big Island. “It takes a long time to get really good at something as complex as architecture,” he reasons. “I’m still learning and glad to be doing so.”
