Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has announced a three-phase plan to provide shelter for the survivors of the recent earthquake in Nepal. Ban, who received the Pritzker Prize in 2014, is known for his humanitarian design work and the efforts of his relief organization Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN).
In the first phase of the Nepal plan, Ban will deploy tents and plastic sheets to create immediate shelter for earthquake survivors and aid workers. Soon thereafter, Ban will team up with local architects and university students to construct more private shelters using regional materials. Finally, Ban will help build permanent homes for families in need.
VAN has conducted similar altruistic operations following natural disasters in Haiti, India, Sri Lanka, China, Italy, New Zealand, and Japan, among other locations.
